Francis Lau
writer . film director . instigator
is a published poet and filmmaker whose work sets out to explore the themes of displacement, memory, guilt and the postlapsarian desire for redemption. His poetry and films have won international awards, and have been presented at festivals across the globe, including ASEAN Universities Arts Festival, ASEAN Writers’ Conference, Clermont-Ferrand, DaKINO, Bucharest International Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Televisión de Barcelona, Chennai International Film Festival, The World Expo in Shanghai and DigiCon6 ASIA.
He is an alumnus of the renowned TorinoFilmLab, as well as the inaugural WritersLab and Feature Film Clinic, both of which are initiatives by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Singapore Film Commission (SFC) to hothouse content development. In 2020, his first feature film received minority co-production support from the Estonian Film Institute, the second Asian film to do so after Mattie Do's "Dearest Sister".
When not on set, Francis develops and teaches modules on screenwriting, cinema studies, film production, discourse writing, and critical thinking skills at tertiary institutions and design schools. He has an Honours degree in English Literature, and professional qualifications in education.
